January 2010

Butlins Mineworkers Contest Skegness 23rd January

Quote from 4barsrest

Another band that enjoyed good late season form was Melton under Graham Sutton. Although they only managed joint 9th here last year, two encouraging performances of late at Leicester (4th) and Leamington Spa (5th) should see them hopeful of being in and around the prizes.

Result

Unfortunately the band finished 11th out of 13th with "tuning issues", and unforeseen circumstances  letting us down on the day.

2009 REVIEW

Contests

The year started with The Meltonband competing for the first time at Butlins Mineworkers Open Brass band Contest. The band finished a credible 9th out of 18 bands. Many of the players and their families took advantage of the accommodation available and enjoyed the weekend which was full of entertainment.

March took us to the area contest at Bedworth where we came 19th out of 21 bands. A very disappointing result.

November 22nd West Midlands Brass Band contest Leamington Spa 5th position out of 7.

November 29th Leicester Festival Loughborough 4th position out of 8.

New Players

The band are always keen to welcome new players and this year we are pleased that the following players have joined us.

Peter Hale - trombone, Stephanie Hale - horn, Sue Rea - Flugel, Laura Springthorpe - cornet, David Potter - cornet, Emily Clare - cornet and Chris Shilham - percussion.

Thank you

As with all bands, there are a number of people working behind the scenes that rarely get mentioned. We have a hardworking committee made up of players and non players. The non-players work hard ensuring that engagements run smoothly.

Rebecca Laughton - our engagement secretary, who without we would have no engagements!

Gina Green - our treasurer, looks after our money and tells us when we are spending too much!

Mandy Hoodless - designs and prints all of our posters and flyers.

Paul Sheldon - our publicity and press manager - promotes engagements, sells tickets and also communicates with local businesses for raffles prizes at concerts.

Spouses and partners for standing in freezing weather collecting money as we play carols, and helping to "cart" equipment from vehicles to bandstands.

Also we must thank our, families and friends for their understanding of our commitment, and for their continued support, encouragement and enthusiasm.

Congratulations

Richard Needham - solo trombone, and Becky Laughton - engagements secretary, married in June.

David Clare won a music scholarship to attend Loughborough Grammar School.

Katie Clare qualified to play in the World Chess Championships at Turkey in November.

August 2009

Baker cooks up new march

Baker

21-Aug-2009
Leigh Baker has produced a new march for the Melton Band - with a perfect musical recipe.

Pork pie
Melton was Leigh's first band, as a sprightly 11 year old, and the march, 'The Meltonian' was commisioned by the Melton Town Estate to mark the 100th anniversary of the town's bandstand.

Premiere
The march contains musical references to hunting, horse racing and of course the famous Melton Mowbray Pork Pie, and the world premiere was heard at the bandstand earlier this month, with Leigh as guest euphonium.

Sad Loss

Band members were saddened to hear the news that Tom Grinter a player and founder member of the band died. Tom had been ill for some time preventing him from playing. Tom had been a member of the band for 38 years and will be sadly missed. Players from the band attended his funeral at Denton where he lived.

Scholarship

Our youngest player David Clare (aged 11) who plays 3rd Cornet has won a Trumpet scholarship at Loughborough Grammar School. David is looking forward to starting at his new school in September. We wish him every success  for his musical future.

4th July

The band were once again delighted to accept the invitation of Gordon Kingsley Principal of Harlaxton Manor to join them in their celebration of American Independence Day. The band were invited to join the guests at their buffet picnic and then played for an hour. The Band played a variety of music including Miller Magic and Sousa on Parade. The weather was perfect and the audience thoroughly enjoyed the performance, evident by their rapturous applause after each piece. The evening culminated in the two National Anthems at which point almost 350 people were on their feet in front of the spectacular Gothique Style Manor.

June 2009

28th June

The band performed a sterling performance at Melton Bandstand. This was an attraction included at the Melton Country Fair. The weather was perfect and we played to a captivated audience. We would like to especially thank our guest players on the day including Leigh Baker from Brighouse and Rastrick Band who played solo trombone for Richard.

21st June.

Two of our committee members were married on June 21st at Brooksby. Richard Needham solo trombone player married Becky Laughton engagements secretary. The Meltonband were present and played during the service and also while the photographs were being taken in the beautiful grounds. Richard and Becky will spend their honeymoon on safari in Kenya. The band wish them both all the best for their future.

19th June

The band performed an evening concert at Harlaxton Church to help them raise funds for the renovation of the Church. The church was full and the band played a selection of music from film and theatre. The evening was enjoyed by both audience and the band.

March 2008
Quotation from 4barsrest:

Melton Borough
Conductor:
L. Blankley

Last 11 Years:

2007: 21st (C. Hartley)
2006: =22nd (C. Hartley)
2005: 18th (C. Hartley)

Melton has bobbled about a bit at the bottom end of the table in the last three years but its great to see them back again more determined than ever to push upwards and onwards.

A new MD at the helm may well mean a change of fortune – you never know, so fingers crossed.

Congratulations!!!!!

We came 7th out of 23 bands!

"There then came a group of performances that did trip over Rodney Newton’s fiendish traps a little more frequently, but also gave solid accounts nonetheless. These included Melton who displayed good musicality and a great performance of merit from their trombone section and tenor horn player although loose ensemble and intonation proved to be costly."
